Odysseus V Ulysses

Character Parallel 1: The Protagonists

Homer's Odyssey revolves around the journey of Odysseus, whilst O Brother, Where Art Thou revoles around the character of Ulysses Everett McGill, which is the Latin form of Odyssey.

Odysseus' vanity inhibits his success, as he yells out his name and home to Polyphemus who in turn asks Poseidon to trouble Odysseus. Likewise Ulysses wears hair pomade throughout the film and must keep his hair looking good. The stench of the pomade enables the Sheriffs (Poseidon) dogs to find him and his crew.

Both characters are cunning and quick-tongued which gets them and their crew out of trouble. Both are also natural leaders who want to go home to their families.
