The Sirens
In The Odyssey the Sirens are beautiful women who lure the sailors to sail near the rocks they lay upon with beautiful and song. When the sailors get to close their ships crash against the rocks and they sink to their graves.
Likewise in O Brother the Sirens lure the three escapees to a river where they give them straight alcohol and they pass out. It differs to the Odyssean Sirens as they number three instead of two and they come into direct contact with Everett and his crew. Also in the film Everett has no power over the Sirens as Odysseus does in The Odyssey, therefore falls the same fate as his friends. These sirens may also represent the princess Nausicca and her maids as here they are presented as washing clothes.
